Are you interested in hosting an exchange student in Arlington, WA? The Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES) is currently interviewing potential host families for students starting school at Lakewood High School in August 2010. The YES Program was created as a result of September 11, 2001 to bring students from predominantly Muslim countries so they can study and live amongst US citizens and get their own up close and personal experience with American culture and people.
The students that are chosen for the YES program are chosen through an intense process for their interest in learning about new cultures, their academic prowess and their leadership abilities. They are considered ambassadors for their countries and receive a full scholarship from the US State Department. Their scholarship includes a monthly government stipend and full medical insurance to cover expenses and any medical emergencies that may pop up during their stay with their host family.
Host families only need to provide a supportive, loving environment. Exchange students are not required to have their own private room. All types of host families are considered, including retirees, single parents and young couples. There are two types of hosts needed; permanent hosts that provide a place for their exchange student for a full school year and ”welcome” families that provide a home for exchange students for 6-8 weeks before the students are placed in their permanent host home.
